Comcast Sued over Open Market Patent

November 21, 2012

Select Notifications Media filed suit against Comcast alleging that the Internet service provider’s “Domain Helper” service infringes a patent related to domain redirection. Comcast discontinued the service (which suggested links and provided alternative selections in response to mis-typed or incorrect website addresses) in January of this year.  This is the first patent infringement suit initiated by Select Notifications Media.  The patent-in-suit was assigned to Select Notifications Media by Paxfire in May 2012.  RPX reviewed the patent-in-suit on the open market two times- in June 2010 and August 2011 as Thinkalike 3 and 4).  According to the Select Notifications complaint, Paxfire provided notice of the patent to Comcast “as early as January 2010.”  Other  recent NPE campaigns targeting domain redirection services include Edison Lux and Acacia’s DN  Lookup Technologies. 11/13, Eastern District of Virginia, assigned to District Judge T.S. Ellis III and referred to Magistrate Judge Thomas Rawles Jones Jr., 1:2012cv01292.
